Why is it important to select the correct Tiller for your Rudder and style boat?
This is a billet aluminum 6061 Tiller. It is 5" from the center of the rudder to the center of the Heim Joints for a dual steering cable set up.
The C channel design for the Heim Joints utilizes a 1/8" spacer on the top and the bottom of the 1/2" joint, preventing it from binding as older style tillers did, which did not have the C channel.
But what options do you have, and what do these dimensions mean?
We offer a standard 5" Tiller, which is a standard (quick) steering ratio. In my particular 21" day cruiser, it still takes me 1 1/2 revolutions on the steering wheel (each direction) to reach full lock. I personally prefer the quicker turning ratio.
However, if you are looking to slow down your steering ratio, we can custom make a 6" Tiller. The 6" length is currently what Schiada Boats run on their new production boats.
Shaft sizes? The shaft size is the diameter of your rudder shaft. The most common sizes are 1" or 1 1/8".
So which length is best for you? Every part of your boat is specific to your personal preference, so the correct length is up to you. Let us know how we can help you.
